Intro and Op-Ed Proposal

What's up guys? My name is Hayden Brown, and this is my blog I guess. I'm from Denton, Texas (but often just say I'm from Dallas because that sounds cooler). I have one sister, who is married and has a super cool two-year old, and a brother who just returned from a mission in Ghana. I was here at BYU over the summer, so I guess you could say I'm an experienced freshman. I don't really have many hobbies, I'm a pretty simple guy. I like to hang out with my friends, longboard, read the news, talk about politics, and I'm a huge fan of the show Breaking Bad. So that's how I spend most of my time. I'm also a Journalism major, so I actually kind of enjoy writing essays. Which is weird.

For my opinion editorial I'll be writing about the campus ban on skateboards. I think this issue is relevant, not only to me, but to many people on campus who view skateboards (or longboards) as a legitimate mode of transportation. I happen to share this opinion. Through experience, I've gathered that BYU claims liability as its reasoning behind the ban. However, I feel that there are some other less obvious reasons behind it. Many of my friends from home attend universities all across the country, and skateboarding is prevalent, and legal, on those campuses. Shouldn't those schools be worried about "liability?"  I feel that the school hopes to keep the campus free of the skateboarding "culture," because it supposedly doesn't reflect well on the school's clean-cut, honor-code abiding image. I'll have to assume that individuals who skateboard or longboard will constitute a significant portion of my audience, but I'm confident, through observation, that they will. I'll also have to assume that a significant number of those individuals desire to ride their boards on campus.

  1. Make sure that if you argue against this, you read BYU's policy carefully to make sure and represent them accurately. You might also find a campus policeman to ask him or her about the policy and exactly why skateboards are prohibited. If you do your research on the counterargument, it will strengthen your argument because you will know exactly what you're up against.

Also, your blog text is impossibly small. You might want to change the font size!
